Halloween is a time for glowing jack-o'-lanterns, spooky costumes, and sugar-fueled excitement. But every once in a while, a neighbourhood visit comes with an unexpected plot twist that leaves everyone laughing.
Here is the story of our unforgettable Halloween night, featuring carved pumpkins, festive path lights, and a classic spooky prank—offering a very welcome relief from local guising customs like in Ancrum, where children still traditionally chant about smashing your windows and never coming back!
The Annual Notice & Path of Lights
You know these neighbours mean business because they come every year, complete with a formal note posted right through our letterbox to notify us of their impending visit. To welcome them properly, I carved two pumpkins and lit them up with candles, while Charlie rigged up some electric lights to illuminate the path leading to the door.
When the big night rolled around, the atmosphere was entirely warm-hearted and friendly as our neighbours arrived right on schedule, fully decked out in brilliant fancy dress.
The Sweet Exchange
We were fully prepared for the spooky squad. We handed over a generous spread, including:
- Toffee apples for a classic, sticky autumn treat.
- A full bucket of sweets to satisfy every sweet tooth in the group.
The Ultimate "Trick"
We thought our annual bribes and illuminated pathway had bought us immunity, but our letterbox-notifying neighbours had other plans. True to the spirit of the night, they decided to trick us anyway!
The prank involved a mysterious carrier bag with a creepy surprise waiting inside: a slimy "hand massage." Dipped right into a gooey batch of slime, it was the perfect, squelch-tastic finale to another brilliant Halloween night—and a wonderfully harmless twist compared to any window-smashing guising chants!
