Field Research Manifesto & Protocol

Field Research Manifesto & Protocol
The Stagnation Contract: A visual documentation of the informal social pressures that govern public and private interactions in Ancrum. By externalising these implicit "rules," we create a space to question the mechanisms of village control, the performance of performative neighbourliness, and the chilling effect used to maintain a static rural idyll. This is the boundary we are working to reanimate.

I. Our Ethical Commitment

The Laboratory of Inquiry operates on a foundation of respect for the community we observe. Our research is guided by:

  • Focus on Public Space: Our activity takes place exclusively in public places. We recognise and uphold the fundamental right of public access and observation in these environments.
  • GDPR Compliance & Data Privacy: We are mindful of our responsibilities under GDPR. Our research is strictly focused on the socio-dynamics of transactions within public space. We are not interested in the personal identities of individuals; any incidental footage is captured solely to analyse environmental and social interactions, and we act with care to ensure the privacy and dignity of all individuals in the public sphere.
  • Integrity of Observation: We document the reality of public life without manipulation or staging.
  • Procedural Transparency: We are open about our methodology. If you are curious about our work, we invite respectful, evidence-based inquiry.
  • Non-Interference: Our presence is for documentation and research; we do not seek to disrupt or alter the events we study.

Our research is a direct exercise of the following fundamental rights:

  • Article 10 (Freedom of Expression): Includes the right to hold opinions and to receive and impart information, including the right to document, film, and research public life.
  • Article 11 (Freedom of Assembly): Protects the right to gather and observe collective life in public spaces.

These rights are not suggestions; they are the cornerstone of a democratic society. As such, any interference with this research must be "necessary and proportionate." Informal intimidation or the misuse of "public order" claims to prevent documentation is a direct challenge to these protected freedoms.
