Someone in our village shop told me that a woman's dog was stranded by Alewater. At first, I offered to climb down the bank and get him, but then I heard that the emergency services were on their way and ready to help.
The fire brigade walked a long way along the river to rescue the dog. I would have abseiled down the grass slope instead, which seems much quicker and less risky.
They brought two dinghies with them. I didn’t realise someone had told them I was planning to go into the river to rescue the dog. An ambulance showed up as well.
About thirty minutes later, the woman arrived in Ancrum with her rescued dog, who did not seem bothered by what had happened.
