S W Coastal Path

Photographs from my ramble over North Dewnens and Kernow coastline, including Bideford, Bude, Porth an Men bay, Sandymouth beach, Kastel Boterel, Tre war Venydh and Porthysek.

Long stone bridge spanning a calm river. The bridge has numerous arches and appears old. Beyond the bridge, a small town or village is visible on a hillside. The sky is mostly cloudy, and the river reflects the bridge and the sky. The overall impression is one of peaceful tranquillity.
Bideford
Tranquil waterfront scene. A calm body of water reflects a cloudy sky and the buildings of a small town or village situated on a hillside in the background. The foreground is a relatively flat shoreline with a sandy or muddy texture. A few boats or barges are visible near the shore.
Bideford
Calm river scene, viewed from a sailboat. A green and white flag, likely representing a region or county, is affixed to the sailboat's mast. In the background, a row of houses is visible on the riverbank, along with a bridge in the far distance. The overall mood is peaceful and serene. The focus is on the flag and the reflective water, creating a sense of place and possibly national or regional pride.
Bideford
Calm river scene, likely at dawn or dusk, judging by the muted light. A bridge spans the river in the mid-ground, with a town on the left bank featuring buildings and parked cars. On the right bank, there's a line of houses. The water is relatively still, creating a mirror-like reflection of the cloudy sky.
Bideford
Close-up view of the bow of an old, rusty tugboat named IONIA. The boat's hull is a mix of faded red, black, and green paint, showing significant wear and tear. The name IONIA is visible on the black section of the hull. Heavy ropes are attached to the boat, and a worn tire is affixed near the bow. The tugboat is beached or docked, with the muddy shoreline visible in the lower left corner. A residential area is faintly visible in the background across calm water. The overall impression is one of age, weathering, and perhaps abandonment or disuse.
Bideford
Metal plate embedded in the ground. The plate is shaped like a footprint and has the words Bideford Kingsley's Little White Town embossed on it. A small symbol, possibly a building or hat, is also visible at the bottom.
Bideford
Two tugboats moored along a muddy riverbank. The foreground is dominated by a larger, blue tugboat named ENDEAVOUR, which appears weathered and shows signs of age and disrepair. A smaller, black tugboat is partially visible behind it. The river is calm, reflecting the cloudy sky and the distant, verdant shoreline.
Bideford
Long, high bridge extending across a calm body of water under a cloudy sky. The foreground is a muddy, exposed shoreline with some rocks and two metal posts. A few small boats are visible in the distance on the water. The overall impression is one of a quiet, somewhat overcast day in a coastal or riverine setting.
Bideford
Tranquil river scene under a cloudy sky. The river is calm and wide, with a muddy shoreline visible in the foreground. Two small boats are visible on the water; a small white motorboat and a red rowboat. The far bank of the river is lined with low-lying vegetation and trees. The overall mood is serene and somewhat muted due to the overcast sky.
Bideford
Calm body of water with a partially submerged, decaying wooden boat in the foreground. The boat appears old and weathered, with significant damage. In the background, there are gently rolling green hills under a light grey sky. A few small boats are visible in the distance, adding to the tranquil, somewhat melancholic atmosphere.
Bideford
Calm body of water with a tranquil landscape in the background. In the foreground are two wrecked boats: one largely intact but decaying, covered in algae and partially submerged, and a smaller, more decomposed wreck. A small, seemingly functional boat is moored near the larger wreck. The background features a picturesque village nestled amongst rolling hills.
Bideford
Whimsical, handcrafted artwork affixed to a stone wall. The piece is a collage of repurposed metal, featuring a mermaid, boats, fish, a crab, and other sea-related imagery, along with buildings and the word Appledore prominently displayed. The style is naive and childlike, with bright colors and simple forms. The overall effect is playful and charming, suggesting a coastal or seaside location.
Appledore
Two-story building, identified as The Old Custom House, with a whitewashed stone wall in front. The building features a bay window with a decorative tile depicting a bird, likely a rooster or similar fowl. There's also a smaller, black-framed window box below the bay window. A hydrant marker is visible on the wall. The overall style suggests an older building, possibly historic.
Bideford
Partially obscured missing person poster. The poster features a photograph of a person with glasses, wearing a hat. The photo is heavily vandalised or defaced with white splotches and streaks, obscuring much of the person's face and the text below the photo. The visible text indicates the individual is missing and includes contact information, although much of it is illegible due to the damage. The overall effect is one of decay and despair, highlighting both the missing person's vulnerability and the indifference or hostility of the act of vandalism. The image’s story is one of loss, potentially compounded by the disrespect shown through the defacement of the poster, emphasizing the vulnerability of the missing person and the helplessness of those seeking them. The moral implication is a commentary on the fragility of life, the importance of community support in times of crisis, and also perhaps a reflection on urban decay and societal apathy.
Appledore
Calm sea at sunset or sunrise. A few small boats, including sailboats, are visible on the horizon. The sky is a pale, soft colour, and the overall mood is serene and peaceful.
Bideford
Bronze-coloured metal inlay set into a paved surface. The inlay is shaped like a footprint and contains the words Westward Ho! in a stylised script font, along with a small acorn image. The design suggests a playful reference to westward expansion or travel.
Western Ho!

Westward Ho! is noted for its unusual place name. The village name comes from the title of Charles Kingsley's novel Westward Ho! (1855), which was set in nearby Bideford. The book was a bestseller, and entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to develop tourism in the area.

Wide, sandy beach under a grey, overcast sky. A low, moss-covered, wave-break structure runs horizontally across the lower third of the image, partially submerged in the wet sand. Beyond that, a substantial area of dark, rounded stones extends to the right and into the background, creating a contrast with the smoother sand.
Western Ho!
Wide sandy beach at low tide, with the receding water leaving behind intricate patterns in the sand. In the background, a line of buildings, including hotels and possibly shops, sits along the coast, nestled against a hill covered in green vegetation.
Western Ho!
Close-up view of a collection of smooth, grey stones, likely found on a beach. Several stones exhibit prominent white and light-colored veins or lines running through them. The stones vary slightly in size and shade, creating a textured and natural arrangement. The overall impression is one of natural beauty and the simple elegance of geological formations.
Western Ho!
Beach scene with wet sand exhibiting patterns created by the receding tide. The lines in the sand are predominantly dark gray and lighter beige, running parallel to each other, creating a textured effect. A light fog or mist hangs in the air, softening the overall appearance. The perspective is from directly above, looking down at the sand.
Western Ho!

Westward Ho! is known for its surfing seas and the long expanse of clean sand backed by a pebble ridge and grasslands which extends for about three miles. The seaward part of the village lies within the North Devon Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Leonie standing on a beach. She's wearing a yellow knit hat and a pink jacket. The beach is mostly sandy with a line of large, grey stones along the water's edge. The sky is overcast. There's a small, possibly symbolic, red mark on her forehead. She is directly facing the camera with a serious expression.
Western Ho!
Close-up view of a sandy beach. The sand is light gray with darker gray streaks and patterns created by the wind or water. The texture is smooth but shows the ripples and undulations caused by the movement of the sand. There are a few small, dark specks scattered across the surface. The overall impression is one of simplicity and natural texture.
Western Ho!
Wide, expansive beach scene under a muted, overcast sky. The sand is a light beige, wet in places, and stretches to the horizon where a faint line of ocean meets the sky. Two tiny, distant figures are barely visible near the waterline, suggesting vastness and solitude. The overall mood is calm, quiet, and somewhat melancholic due to the grey tones dominating the image.
Western Ho!
Leonie standing on a beach, facing the camera. She has shoulder-length curly auburn hair, and wears a mustard-yellow knitted hat and a black jacket with a pink hood. A small, dark mark resembling a bindi is visible on her forehead. She is wearing a necklace with a moonstone pendant. The background is a hazy, pale beach and ocean. The overall mood is serene and contemplative.
Western Ho!
Beach scene, specifically the wet sand patterned by the receding tide. The patterns are a series of flowing, curving lines in light and dark shades of beige and grey. A light fog or mist hangs in the air, obscuring the background.
Western Ho!
Sandy beach with dark rocks and small pools of water at low tide. Small streams of water cut through the sand, leading towards the ocean in the background, which is a calm grey-blue under a cloudy sky. Patches of greenish-brown seaweed are visible in some of the rock crevices and on the sand. The overall impression is one of a serene, yet somewhat desolate, coastal scene.
Western Ho!
Tranquil beach scene on an overcast day. The water is calm, with gentle waves lapping the shore. The sand is wet and shows patterns from receding water. The overall mood is serene and muted due to the grey sky and subdued colours.
Western Ho!
Wide, sandy beach with gentle waves lapping the shore. In the background, a line of buildings is visible against a low, green hill under a cloudy sky. The overall mood is serene and somewhat muted due to the overcast conditions. The sand shows patterns created by the receding tide.
Western Ho!
Large spiral pattern etched into the wet sand of a shallow body of water. The spiral is created by tire tracks from a vehicle that has repeatedly circled in concentric loops. The overall tone is muted and tranquil, with a flat, calm expanse of water extending to a distant shoreline under a cloudy sky.
Western Ho!
Wide, flat beach under a pale, overcast sky. The word SHHH is lightly etched into the wet sand near the water's edge. Two small figures are visible in the far distance walking along the shoreline. The overall mood is serene and quiet.
