Hermitage Castle is a partly ruined castle located in Scotland’s border region. It sits in the quiet valley of the Hermitage Water, within Liddesdale in Roxburghshire. The castle is known for its dark history and striking appearance, making it one of the most eery and atmospheric castles in Scotland.

Nicholas de Soulis is believed to have built Hermitage Castle around 1240, following the usual Norman Motte and Bailey style. The castle remained in his family until about 1320, when his descendant William de Soulis lost it after being accused of witchcraft and trying to kill King Robert I of Scotland.
